Such exchanges are offered now through virtuality, however. Social media shapes every country: with endless networks sharing stories with ease. The news is without limit — and the aftermath is the slow decline of papers.

Newspapers were once the only methods of communication. The arrival of the Internet, however, ushered in a loss of readership. Individuals flocked to their computers, replacing pages with screens, and it’s become a struggle for papers to survive — which is why they’ve learned not to challenge social media, but instead to use it.

Networking is a familiar process online: with users sending information across the web, posting links to content. Newspapers now utilize this — flooding the Internet with suggestions of their most compelling pieces. The intention is to tempt readers, forcing them to seek out print. This increases sales, as well as circulating articles.

Choosing to post on media sites (forums, blogs and similar venues) ensures that the necessary demographics are targeted. Readers are sought and found — with information meant to piqué their interests. Such a method helps to generate awareness of newspapers online, as well as securing their survival in the real world. And it’s common now to blur virtuality with brick and mortar traditions.

There are ways to avoid the expected doom, however — and choosing to track reader preferences proves to be the best of these.

Newspapers often boast web sites, allowing guests to glimpse stories online. This is to ensure that articles remain current. Utilizing tracking software, however, can ensure that they’re also recognized: with the most popular pieces noted. Programs chart out daily visitations of each topic, allowing editors to see which authors have the highest readerships and which headlines appeal.

This is invaluable for struggling newspapers. Choosing to track readers proves what sparks the most interest — which allows papers to then tailor their online content to those particular items. This increases traffic, ushering in guests and gaining reputations.

Social media dominates the globe. Newspapers must accept this — instead of trying to battle it. Such efforts would prove futile. It seems the most elegant of solutions: a web site is created, providing all of the necessary headlines. It demands no cost; it requires no fees. All articles are instead offered to readers — able to be browsed with ease.

To counter this convenience, a traditional newspaper boasts a higher price. The intention is to earn public favor with social media, encouraging them to then pay for print. The formula seems without flaw.

Instead, however, it offers no rewards beyond increased online traffic and plummeting sales.

Too often do newspapers — trying to stay relevant — seek to increase their prices after offering free sites. It’s assumed that loyal demographics will be willing to buy articles, trying to compensate for the content they read without charge (a form of marketing guilt).

This doesn’t work, however. Instead readers become frustrated with rising costs, choose instead to obtain all information online — and newspapers find themselves struggling once again to survive.

It’s necessary therefore that all papers learn to balance these notions: traditional print and social media. Web sites are essential for the modern reader; but they should not offer free content. Providing snippets of articles (and then requiring users to pay for the remaining text) is instead recommended. This will — at least — generate virtual sales. And, by allowing print prices to remain steady, readerships can increase: simply because users may think buying papers is less expensive than choosing individual articles.

Trying to manipulate readers into purchasing facts for higher costs is unwise. Newspapers must instead rely on less dramatic tactics.

Newspapers have been circulating in this country for well over three hundred years – from the British colonies newspapers of the seventeenth century to the Internet newspapers of the twenty-first century. In print or on screen, people have been turning to newspapers as their source of news.

Many early pre-American newspapers were reprints of months-old material from London news sheets. James Franklin, Benjamin Franklin’s older brother, published one of the first original newspapers in Colonial-era America. His new paper – The New-England Courant – printed more than just the public addresses of politicians or old news. It included essays on a variety of subjects and letters of satire. The satirical letters were made up of fake correspondents intended to entertain or serve as a sort of social commentary.

After settling in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin bought one of two existing city news sheets – both of which he deemed wretched – and rechristened it The Pennsylvania Gazette. The Gazette became a vehicle for Franklin’s wit, satire, and commentary. Other papers circulated during this time. Most of which shared a similar format of wit, essays, satire, and news.

The Colonies were still under British rule and as such, writing anything less than positive about the Crown could be dangerous. Papers writing anything considered “radical” or seditious faced suppression and censor, at least. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, published in 1776 was called, by one historian, “the most incendiary…pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era.”

From entertaining or informing readers to giving voice to dangerous political ideas, newspapers have had a significant impact on America. Now, as the paper itself gradually fades away, it finds new life digitally and remains a constant news source.

Sarah Palin has gained some notoriety by criticizing what she calls the liberal lame-stream (as opposed to mainstream) media. She points to an alleged hard-left bias in the media and she’s not the only one making claims of political favoritism in mainstream media outlets. Liberals cry that the media leans too far to the right and conservatives cry that it leans too far to the left. Some of these claims are at least partly true. FNC talk shows tend to portray conservatism, and CNN news programs, liberalism. But partisan media bias is nothing new.

By the 1800s, newspaper editors – with ever-expanding audiences – began using their papers as vehicles for specific opinions. As the first political party systems formed, newspapers took sides. Parties used friendly papers to talk to their supporters and occasionally attack political opponents. Some of these attacks were no doubt valid and others were venomous slander full of name-calling and lies.

In a day now, where news is delivered over a variety of mediums, bias in mainstream outlets remains – and much of it does appear to actually lean to the left, according to a UCLA study. Some websites, like factcheck.org, try to navigate the partisan haze and present a more even view of political news.

Those searching for truly nonpartisan news in an environment of media bias may have a difficult time of doing so. If the media persists in presenting a partisan slant – and if history is any example, it will – viewers may have to take it upon themselves to perhaps get their news from a variety of sources and then come to their own opinions.

Americans alive at the time remember where they were when Pearl Harbor was attacked, when JFK was shot, and when terrorists killed around three thousand people on September 11th, 2001. The images of this day are burned into the minds of those who witnessed it. It also awakened us to a threat few believed capable of such an attack.

War on Terror and Iraq War

After 9-11, America and allies began a war on terror that would start in Afghanistan and expand to terrorist groups in other countries. In 2003, following intelligence, allied forces invaded Iraq, ousted the terrorist-friendly government, and began fighting extremists in the country.

Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and Indian Ocean Tsunami

In 2004, the third-largest earthquake ever recorded occurred near Sumatra. The 9.1-9.2 earthquake shook the world, set off quakes as far away as Alaska and triggered a devastating tsunami that swept the Indian Ocean and claimed the lives of over 230,000 people.

Not all big stories of the 00s were huge deadly events. 2007 saw the beginning of a years-long global recession. 2008 saw the election of Barack Obama. The 2000s gave us Google, YouTube, Facebook and more. A lot has happened over the last decade. And given the events of the 2010s so far, the current decade should be interesting too.

There are many ways to write a great feature story for a local newspaper, that are not only fun to write, but are also popular with readers. Feature stories normally have an angle or a slant, geared toward one locality or its residents.

Feature stories are usually kept anywhere from 300 to 700 words, which makes them easy to write, and easy to read. The most popular are stores that are exclusive to those readers where the newspaper circulates.

While it might seem to an outsider that the only form of media that is under this threat is that of print newspapers it is not. The Internet, radio stations and TV stations are also under the same jurisdiction as the print media. However, since there are less private sectors for this the threat is less to the government and it gets less attention. In fact, there is only currently one TV station that broadcasts items to those in Cameroon and it is government owned and sponsored.

If you are heading to Cameroon you can understand exactly why all the media outlets seem to publish the same stories and opinions. It is because of the fear or government censorship or legal problems.

Almost all publications that are printed in Cameroon are printed in the official language of the country, French. However, there are various publications that are translated into Bulu, Duala and other languages that are commonly spoken throughout Cameroon. Some of the publications are also available in English.

The print publications in Cameroon are also limited in distribution. Unlike in America where distribution is daily, Cameroon lacks the resources and ability to update as often. The only publication that offers daily service is the official governmental newspaper The Cameroon Tribune. This is published daily in French. However, there is an English version that is printed at least once a week.

Although Cameroon’s constitution allows freedom of the press it does not really have that. The government controls a lot of what is published and should a story be considered a risk to national security the government has the right to pull the publication from the shelves and limit who gets to read the publication. However, the government will usually only do this on issues that are hot topics, those that speak about oppression of government or those that speak extremely bad about the government.

Internet. In a recent study that was run in 2003 it was determined that people in Cameroon have access to the Internet. However the numbers are surprising. Out of 1,000 people only 5.7 actually owned a personal computer. Of those 5.7 people only 4 had access to the Internet. Surprisingly there are three internet service providers that provide access to the country.

Print Publications. There is estimated to be dozens of various government and private publications in Cameroon. The main source of print publications is the government run newspaper, Cameroon Tribune. However, there are also private presses and it was estimated that there are 40 to 50 of those in existence.

Radio Stations. There is a government run radio station that is used commonly by those in Cameroon. There are also various private radio companies and stations. It is estimated that there are over 20 radio stations throughout the Cameroon area.

TV Stations. There is only one official broadcast company in Cameroon. This is the Cameroon Radio Television Station. However the access people have to TVs is limited. There are only 75 TV sets per 1000 people.

Cameroon is governed by the constitution. In this constitution it allows the people of Cameroon to have a freedom of the press and print or publish what they want. However, there is a slight snag in the theory.

Cameroon’s media is almost completely owned and operated by the Cameroon government. So while they may be granted the ability to have freedom of the press, the government can override what is published and printed.  While there are tiny small press operations they are few and far between. The government has also been known to run interference with these small, private presses and have been known to stop stories from running that they viewed as dangerous to the public safety and security of the citizens of the country.

So what does this mean for the citizens of Cameroon? This means that the government will usually prevent any negative press, opposing viewpoints and defaming publications on the government to go to print. Should the citizens only have access to the government run publications it could prevent them from seeing all sides of an issue and could develop very judgmental viewpoints to form.

It is believed that people who see or read media outlets that are filled with numerous crime stories that these people start to become extremely fearful of their surroundings. These people also have a tendency to believe that crime rates are twice as high as they normally are.

The reverse of the above situation happens when people watch or listen to news stories about their community that are extremely positive. These people tend to believe that there is no crime in their area and that they are safe because there have been no reported crime stories on the TV or radio.

Regardless of which impact a person experiences one this is for sure. When the stories are portrayed on the TV it has a huge impact on the viewer’s perception of crime. Print media and Internet media has a slight impact but does not have such an influencing factor.

It is unclear why media has this type of impact on people. Many researchers believe that those that have been a victim of a crime in the past are more likely to start to develop this type of thinking. Research also suggests that women, elderly people and Caucasian people are more likely to allow media to have this type of effect on them.

Printed media has been around for a number of decades. Newspapers, magazines and pamphlets have all played a major role in society and history. With this position in history it can be hard to believe that there would be any type of negative effects from the printed media. However, there are certain journalistic experts who believe that there are certain elements of printed media that can lead to potentially negative effects on society. Here is a look at some of the negative effects printed media can have.

Perception of Crime. Many people get their perception of the crime in the area or a specific city from the newspaper. Depending upon the amount of stories involving crime and violence people will begin to develop a perception that crime is evolving in certain areas and not in others. This leads people to either feel incredibly safe or extremely nervous about their surroundings.

Perceptions on Politics/World Events. Printed media has had a major impact on how people view politics and world events. Many people will blindly follow what is printed in the newspaper about specific areas and events. Even if it is one small story people tend to believe that that is how the whole area should be perceived. This can lead to prejudice opinions or skewed opinions on other parts of society.

Body Image. The printed media is responsible for portraying a lot of different images on how people should look. There have been numerous studies done in regards to women, magazines and eating disorders. It is believed that there is a correlation between all of these items because cover models or those in the media are becoming thinner and thinner and that causes many women to believe that since its in print that is society’s normal. This can lead to psychological, emotional and physical problems.

The first benefit that comes with print media that society sees is the ability to create lasting memories. Some of history’s most important moments are memorialized by what the heading and picture of the daily newspaper had. In fact, the front page of the print newspaper is still so important that many internet outlets and TV news stations will still take time to show the headlines of the newspaper. The Internet can never replace these memories and people will still use the front page of the print newspaper as a guideline for what is important in the world.

The second benefit is the ability to give readers the story and facts. The problem with Internet media is that there can be hundreds of distractions from other websites, ads and games that people have a hard time focusing on the news and what is being said. When a person reads the printed newspaper they are focused completely on the news and gathering information like they wouldn’t normally on the Internet.

The last benefit that print media offers society is the change to get away from the computer. Many people spend their whole day looking at the computer. These people do not want to spend their day when they get home looking at the computer. A printed newspaper allows them to get their news without having to rely upon the Internet for their news needs.

Personal Blogs. Bloggers are always on top of things and might have the latest news and information. However, most bloggers are not journalists. They tend to offer a biased outlook on issues and topics. They can also offer inaccurate information as they usually post and write about what they heard through the grapevine. Some personal blogs can be valuable so it is a matter of paying attention and looking at previous posts to determine if they are reliable.

WikiPages. Wikipedia has become extremely popular as a way to get information including news stories. However, Wikipedia should never be used as a reliable source for news. The problem with Wikipedia pages is that it takes a general consensus of information from the public. The public is also allowed to update it with whatever information they want. This can lead to inaccurate information or wrong quotes being used by the general public that is looking for accurate news related information.

Forums. Forums are a place for the Internet public to gather. However, just like personal blogs there is a chance to present a biased view or inaccurate information. Many forum posters will post to reliable news sources and that can be an important piece of information but information that is just freely posted by posters should be taken with extreme caution as it could be wrong, biased or inaccurate.

It is interesting to note the simplicity of many online surveys. Social media networking giant Facebook, for instance, asks customers if the answer is helpful, in regards to an answer to common problems in its “Help” section. If “no” is selected, a number of choices are given along with the opportunity to explain (text box) why it was not helpful.

Simple to implement on any website, it becomes obvious as to the usefulness of these online surveys. Businesses are given a simple way to receive valuable feedback from customers, which can be in reference to a simple help page – or something much larger, such as whether customers enjoy the new product line.

The benefits of online surveys have accounted for its popularity over the Internet. Cameroon has been developing their media outlets for a number of years. It is estimated that as of to date there are over 105 main telephone lines per 1,000 people throughout the country and that there are about 66 mobile telephones for every 1,000 people. This dramatic improvement in the number of phones and outlets that people have to communicate with each other has allowed Cameroon to develop their news outlets into what it is today.

Today the media and news outlets are able to encompass a far wider range of the country of Cameroon. In the past, media was limited to what the government broadcasted and allowed to be shown as well as what was going on in the main capital. This was because this was the only city to contain phones and a means to communicate. Now with the development of the telecommunication structure the news can cover all types of villages and cities.

Print Media. Print media is the oldest form of journalism. It dates back a number of years. Print media is essentially anything that is on printed paper. It is anything that an individual can hold in their hands and read. The most common forms of print media include newspapers and magazines. In today’s world where children are being protected to the best of our abilities, and laws are put in place to try and make sure our children are safe, mistakes are still being made. In some courts today rapists and pedophiles are still able to go home after serving time for their crime in a jail or prison, and are able to spend time alone with their sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, or other children they may have contact with. So, maybe you are tired of hearing me talk about the Sergio Martinez vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. But you will just have to endure just a few minutes more. A friend of mine placed a bet on the fight for the first time ever. She typically doesn’t do something like that, but she was just sure she knew who the winner would be. The Cameroon National Football Team has been in the running for the FIFA World Cup six times. Known affectionately as Les Lions Indomptables (The Indomitable Lions), this team attained a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. It highest ranking with Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) hit number 11 in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The Indomitable Lions are known worldwide as one of the strongest and most successful teams in Africa. This team is no doubt the pride of football fans in Cameroon nationwide.

In 1990, Roger Milla helped lead the team to the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup games. Milla was 38 at the time, giving him the distinction of being one of the oldest players in the world cup games. During that game he scored four goals for Cameroon.

Born May 20, 1952, Roger Milla played forward for the Lions in three world cups. Playing on his first team at 13 years of age, Milla is named among the FIFA 100. This list is selected by Brazilian legendary player Pele. It boasts the top 125 players of the sport.

Another popular player is Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o. Eto’o serves as captain for the Cameroon national team. He’s played for Real Madrid, Mallorca, and Barcelona. He became the youngest player on the FIFA World Cup scene at age 17 in June 1998. Samuel Eto’o was also on the gold medal winning 2000 Summer Olympic squad.

One of the world’s best goalkeepers, Thomas Nkono was both a controversial figure and a talented player. Nkono played with Roger Milla on the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad.

Day after day reporters discuss Tiger Woods’ infidelity, how his career has taken a turn, what his ex-wife is going to get out of the divorce, etc. Is this really news? Is this something that the public should be concentrating on? There are so many other newsworthy stories out there that deserve the public’s attention more than anything else. For example, there is a girl in Utah who has Muscular Dystrophy and has lost all use of her arms. Yet, she is able to design a Christmas card every year using her computer and a mouse she operates with her head. She sells these cards on her website, then donates the proceeds to the African Well Fund. There should be more inspirational stories like this in our news today! Take the focus off the celebrities and every little thing that they do, and focus on things that really matter.

The news is filled with stories predicting the demise of newspapers, magazines and other traditional forms of media. While it is true that many people do now seek their news for free online, a significant number of people still depend on print media for their daily dose of information. The Nobel Prize in literature recently went to a writer from Peru. The international honor is handed out by the Swedish Academy. Mario Vargas Llosa, who once ran for president of Peru in 1990 and lost, is known for penning books that paint pictures of society’s power structures and those people who fight against the establishment. He is hailed as a writer who has a keen way of describing the political climate in Latin America. However, he’s also known as a versatile author who has produced works in a variety of genres including murder mystery, humor, historical, and thrillers. Among his most popular books (written in Spanish) are The Time of the Hero, The Feast of the Goat, and The Green House.

Mario Vargas Llosa has spent time teaching in the United States. He did stints on the faculty at Georgetown in the 1990s and 2000s. In fact, Vargas Llosa was working as a visiting professor at Princeton University when he received the news that he had won the Nobel Prize. When the news came in the form of an early morning phone call, the 74-year-old author reportedly thought it was a joke. Shortly after receiving the call, he said the prize recognized more than just his own work. He said it recognizes the Spanish language and how important it is to millions of people around the world.

Past winners of the Nobel Prize in literature include such well-known writers as Toni Morrison, Saul Bellow, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus. There was much speculation about who would win the prize in 2010. Many experts believed that Mario Vargas Llosa had only a long shot at receiving the coveted prize. Some speculated that a poet would likely win. However, other observers noted that this international recognition for Vargas Llosa was long overdue.

The fundamental (and literal) structure of books is changing and literature will never be the same. First, there was the Kindle from Amazon. This device, known as an ereader, allowed avid readers to upload multiple books and take them virtually anywhere. It made literature even more portable, eliminating the need to tote heavy and bulky books on vacation, commuter trains, and airplanes.

As competition heats up between companies offering ereaders, consumers will demand more features. Already, both the Kindle and Nook give consumers a way to access the Internet. Each device boasts fast page turns, a lightweight design, and support applications that will enhance your reading experience. Essentially, sports reporting first aired in Cameroon in the 1960s. The radio station was called Radio Diffusion du Cameroon or Radio Cameroon. It’s ironic that some papers are trying to stay alive by writing about how they’re dying. Explaining why newspapers are a dying breed is a complex question, but, more than most industries, the people who work for the papers are responsible.

For newspapers, the policy of retaining senior people in tough times is understandable. People who have been with a company for a long time may have more knowledge than newer hires. When layoffs must occur, managers are usually reluctant to fire senior staff. However, in the case of newspapers, these are exactly the people who should be fired. For one, they make more money than junior staff do, making them bigger expenses for the struggling company. And, these senior people are often the most resistant to change, which is precisely what a dying paper needs to survive. Keeping younger people on the payroll has a greater chance of inducing innovation at the paper. When it comes down to it, as long as the news in a paper is well-written, factual, and timely, readers don’t really care who is writing it. Therefore, papers have partially dug their own graves by holding on to those who are holding them back.

We have come to think that only the Internet is responsible for such scams, but the truth is, scammers will use any venue they can to trap their victims. Newspapers are so busy now that they aren’t able to look into each job listing provided. They won’t check up on them and so it is up to you as the job searcher to be careful of what you are getting into.

Job scammers have one goal in mind – making money off of you. They seek out gullible victims as their targets. They will place their ads in free newspapers and ask for your personal information. They will also ask you to pay a joining fee to the dream job they have advertised. This is the point when you have been scammed. Do not pay for a job. You are looking to get paid, not pay out. But, the job scammer will convince you that this is an investment. Please beware.

These type jobs are usually advertised as something you can do from home in very little time. They paint the picture of you earning an amount that is appealing without any need of an education. All you need to do is pay a small fee for the gateway to your wealth. Sounds too good to be true, right? It usually is.

They will especially get you by telling you that there are only a limited amount of spaces available. Again, these are the words of the scammer.

Its unfortunate, but newspapers will collect their money for those who wish to pay an ad and that can mean that you end up victim to a scam. Look out for the above warning signs and you will stay clear of the scams.

Choices Conquer Controversy

Controversy for the sake of being controversial may seem like a quick fix for some papers. And, many newspaper columnists have succeeded for years on this very basis. For instance, Dan Shaughnessy, a long-time columnist for The Boston Globe, has made a career out of writing polarizing sports articles that alternately praise and condemn local sports teams, players, and managers. Perhaps The Globe has retained Shaughnessy’s services for so long because readers like his articles, or maybe it’s just because of seniority. However, The Globe’s circulation is in heavy decline. Perhaps, readers have increasingly realized that, through the internet, they can find the exact flavor of sports news that they want. A statistics buff can find a site that is heavily informational, or a celebrity-hound can find a site that has lots of pictures of sports players and information about their personal lives. So, manufacturing controversy will probably only attract readers that only want controversy – most likely, a smaller subset of readers than The Globe’s owners would hope.

Newspapers are still very much alive. No matter what the world of technology has thrown at us, we are still reading the newspaper. Proof of that is the advertisers who keep purchasing ad space. What can you do to get the most of your advertising dollars? Check out these tips:

1. Place your ad on a good day. For most papers, this day would be a Sunday as this is the day that most people have more time to sit down and read the entire paper without being in a hurry. If you can only choose one day, Sunday should be your day.
2. Be consistent. Don’t give up after the first try. Continue placing your ad at least once a week so that your brand becomes familiar to the regular readers.
3. Make your ad stand out. To have your ad best seen, you should put it at the top half of the page before the paper folds.
4. Be colorful! Black and white generally doesn’t grab attention. Because a newspaper already has so much black and white, your colored ad will stand out more.
5. You are the creator of your ad. Stick with your graphic artists and those people that have a vested interest in your product. Those are the ones that will design the best looking ad for you. Often times, people look to the newspaper to design the ad and it never turns out quite as good.
6. Grab attention. The wording in your ad should really attract the reader’s attention. Imagine you are writing a story that is supremely newsworthy.
7. Test your ad. The beginning process is about learning which ad is going to give you the best response. So try different days, different styles, different placement and different wording. If your first doesn’t work, try and try again. Track it so you know what does work.
8. Once you have found your magic numbers, designs and placement, stick with it and enjoy the response and the revenue!
