Tracking Readers for Rewards: Newspapers

Public favor is fickle: this is a truth earned through years and ink smears, the dismissal of pages. Discontent is common among the masses — who toss articles away if the headlines don’t please — and newspapers often find themselves struggling to maintain readerships.

The arrival of social media has offered no relief. Individuals hurry to the Internet, choosing to customize their searches, seeking articles that tempt (without having to wade through words that don’t). Failure seems imminent for traditional print.

There are ways to avoid the expected doom, however — and choosing to track reader preferences proves to be the best of these.

Newspapers often boast web sites, allowing guests to glimpse stories online. This is to ensure that articles remain current. Utilizing tracking software, however, can ensure that they’re also recognized: with the most popular pieces noted. Programs chart out daily visitations of each topic, allowing editors to see which authors have the highest readerships and which headlines appeal.

This is invaluable for struggling newspapers. Choosing to track readers proves what sparks the most interest — which allows papers to then tailor their online content to those particular items. This increases traffic, ushering in guests and gaining reputations.

Social media dominates the globe. Newspapers must accept this — instead of trying to battle it. Such efforts would prove futile. All forms of print should instead utilize virtual readers, tracking their preferences and submitting content. This boosts public favor and offers hope beyond the Internet.

What to Expect in a Drug Rehabilitation Program

An addict’s best chance of living a healthy and addiction free life is to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Depending on the severity of the addiction and the person’s situation, day treatment programs and live-in residential programs are available. Not all treatment centers are the same. Each facility will have their own way of helping a person kick their addictions, different programs, different treatment methods, different philosophies. Before committing to a drug treatment program, do some research to find a program that feels comfortable and meets the needs of the addict

While in a drug rehab program, there are several types of treatment available and all patients will take part in each different treatment. People obtaining help at a drug rehab center will first go through detox, which is getting all the toxins from the alcohol or drugs out of the body in a safe environment. Then, the person will take part in various forms of therapy, such as individual and group therapy. The person may be responsible for chores to help keep a live-in facility clean and to teach responsibility, there may be opportunities for activities, such as arts and crafts, hikes, playing games and listening to music.

Most treatment centers only treat the addiction, without treating both the addiction and the mental health issues the victim is also suffering from. This could be detrimental to a person’s healing and will almost always end in a relapse of the addictive behavior. If a person has mental health issues along with substance abuse, it is imperative that both issues are treated. When a person with a mental health issue has that issue under control, they will be less likely to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol.

Michael’s House offers prescription drug rehabilitation services to people that are addicted to prescription medication. Here, trained professionals address the physical addiction to the prescription drug as well as the psychological dependence upon prescription drugs. Visit MichaelsHouse.com for more information.

Are you Ready for Assisted Living?

Is your health beginning to suffer because of an accident, an injury or because you are getting a little long in the tooth? Well, that is no reason to despair. While the notion that you might need professional help to do the normal things in life is far from pleasant, it is definitely possible to live in some measure of comfort and dignity. In this day and age, living in a nursing home is not as bad as many people think it is. However, there are some questions you’ll want to ask first.

Is the condition serious enough that it requires an assisted living facility?  Sometimes the condition is a tragic illness and sometimes it’s simply the natural results of old age.  In either case, there is one simple indicator that will tell you if the situation is right for you.  If you are unable to complete standard tasks like cooking your own food or maintaining a full house, assisted living provides an excellent stepping stone.

Once you’ve asked this important question, be sure that you also ask yourself if this assisted living facility is accessible to the people who might come to see you.  In the case of the people who care enough to come and visit you on a regular basis, you might as well make it as easy for them as you possibly can. Most people who live in a nursing home feel somewhat isolated, as the people they see 99% of the time are just the other residents and the staff.  Additionally, question whether the staff is friendly and knowledgeable enough to be able to help you.  Some facilities are a lot like military barracks — things are extremely structured, privacy is practically non-existent, and the accommodations put a whole new shine on the term “spartan.” Other facilities, on the other hand, are a little bit like summer camp.

Get Pet Insurance on Day One

Stopping by the animal shelter to adopt a new pet with your loved one, whether that be your significant other, spouse, or a child, is a special experience that is the starting point to creating lasting memories. Whether the animal that catches everyone’s eye is a dog, cat, ferret, or some other furry friend, it’s important that you know the level of commitment that owning a pet implies. There’s obviously more to the process than simply feeding the animal and making sure that it doesn’t escape from your house, where predators might injure it. Just as children (and adults) require certain things to maintain a healthy life, so too do pets.

And one of the most important things that a pet might need at any point in time, is emergency medical care. It can be hard to picture such a thing, watching the cuddly ball of fuzz jump around in its new environment, learning the new curves and mazes created by a new set of walls. The scene is playful, everyone is laughing, enjoying the amusement created by a pet which is suddenly in a new home. But in a single startled moment, the scene can turn disastrous. When the unfamiliar surroundings cause a frightened animal to injure itself in an effort at escape from a fear-causing stimuli, the scene, and mood, changes instantly.

A visit to the veterinarian is suddenly necessary. If you haven’t gotten pet insurance at the same time that you signed the ownership papers, the expense involved in this sudden, unexpected care visit can be hard to bear. It’s important to think ahead – a pet may not be quite as precious to you as a child, particularly when it’s new and somewhat unfamiliar, but it will quickly become a cherished creature. Treat it right at the outset, by providing for all conceivable needs, including medical care visits.

4 Tips for Moving While Pregnant

Moving is a stressful event for anyone, and it can be twice as hard for pregnant women. But it can also be an exciting time as one chapter is closed and another one opens. Following a few simple tips will help make moving while pregnant as pleasant as possible.

Start out by being organized:
The more organized you are, the less stress you will feel. You will feel that you are in control. Create an inventory list to make sure everything that was packed, is also unpacked. This list can also help if items are damaged during the move and an insurance claim is placed. Have a plan and stick to it. Delegate tasks and keep track of who is doing what.  Don’t forget to get some moving quotes.

Do not lift heavy objects:
Leave the heavy stuff for the movers, your husband, or any other capable person. If you do have to do some lifting, make sure it is light and make sure you are lifting with your legs to avoid muscle strains or pregnancy complications. You will probably be the primary unpacker as the heavy work of unloading boxes and furniture is not good for a pregnant woman.

Drink a lot of water and take a lot of rests:
Depending on how far along you are, you may need a lot of breaks to rest and catch your breath. As the baby grows, there is less room for your lungs to expand, thus making it easy to loose your breath and tire quicker.

Keep plenty of moving supplies on hand:
Always buy more packing supplies than what you think you’ll need. Have several rolls of tape, a large supply of boxes, markers to label boxes, and newspaper to keep items from breaking. The last thing you want to do is taxi back and forth to the store to purchase more supplies.

Reading the Fine Print of a Pet Insurance Policy

LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 6: Activists with H...

Imagine having your pet suffer some severe emergency situation such as getting hit by a car, getting ill or cutting themselves on a sharp object. As a pet owner you rush to an emergency vet and have your pet taken care of because you have everything covered by a pet insurance policy, only to find out 20 days later that you are getting a bill for the whole service and your pet insurance policy is denying the claim.

This type of situation is happening to more and more pet owners. Pet owners believe that they are doing what they should for their pets by purchasing these pet insurance policies. They believe that they are protecting their cat, dog or bird from having a worst case scenario and in some cases they are protecting their wallet. However, when an emergency situation arises their pet isn’t covered and the pet owner faces a stack of bills.

Situations like this have started to spring up all over the country as more and more pet insurance companies are trying to target pet owners. They send pet owners information on pet insurance and even call up and ask if they are interested. They make a pet owner feel secure and as if they are protecting their pet. The unfortunate thing is that many pet owners don’t read the fine print or ask questions regarding the policy.

These pet insurance companies aren’t denying the coverage because they are being mean or unfair. They are denying the coverage either because the pet owner took the pet to a non-approved emergency vet or the policy the pet owner purchased was for preventative care only.

Let examples like the situation above be a lesson to all pet owners. If you want to protect your pet from everything, make sure to read the fine print. You and your pet don’t want to experience any type of surprises!

Using Electronic Cigarettes is a Personal Choice

Electronic cigarette
Image by Denni Schnapp via Flickr

If you do a web search about electronic cigarettes, you’ll be met with a variety of mixed feelings, reviews, advertisements and blog entries from people about them. These individuals are about as diverse as a group of people can be–there are smokers, non-smokers, old people, young people, those who write from personal experience with electronic cigarettes, and those who are just writing from what they have read and what their friends have told them.

There are the success stories.

People boast that the humble electronic cigarette, a vapor atomizing device that doesn’t actually emit any smoke at all, helped them to quit smoking several packs of tobacco cigarettes per day even after being constant smokers for twenty to thirty years and having attempted to quit multiple times in the past. Others applaud the electronic cigarette not for helping them quit smoking, but for eliminating the dangerous and irritating side effects of smoking tobacco, such as bad breath, second-hand smoke affecting those around them, and the risk of lung cancer.

There are the naysayers.

The FDA hasn’t technically approved of electronic cigarettes, these individuals shout–they’re drug-delivery devices and there might still be dangerous chemicals and trace amounts of nicotine in even the nicotine-free cartridges. Electronic cigarette cartridges and even the devices themselves come in a wide variety of flavors and customizable colors, these individuals say with concern, which makes them appeal more to young people and thus encourages more underage smoking.

There are the ones who don’t care either way.

Electronic cigarettes are a trend, they say. They’ll either fade away after an initial surge of popularity or they’ll hang around as just another way of smoking, for better or for worse. Perhaps this last group has the right “live and let live” attitude; after all, whether you approve of electronic cigarettes or not, using them or not is a personal choice.
